The Archbishop of Melbourne, Dr Philip Freier, formally installed Professor Hinchcliff at a moving service of Evensong in the Trinity Chapel, and an elegant and celebratory dinner followed. More than 230 guests 鈥 family, friends, Fellows, alumni, students and staff 鈥 were clear in affirming the Archbishop鈥檚 call to support the new Warden and impressed by Professor Hinchcliff鈥檚 speech in response to a welcome from the Chairman of the Trinity Board, Mr Jim Craig.
In his speech, Professor Hinchcliff shared his vision for the College, saying it will be a Trinity 鈥榯hat takes all the strength and wisdom of our past, retains its core values, and adapts to the changing demands of modern tertiary education鈥.
The installation was an important expression of the rich Trinity community. Professor Hinchcliff鈥檚 daughter and Trinity alumna, Ms Alexandra Hinchcliff, and Trinity Senior Fellow, Bishop James Grant, read lessons; and prayers were read by Foundation Studies student Ms Sherry Wang, resident Senior Student Mr Jack Dawson, and the President of the Theological School students, Ms Melissa Clark.
The College was honoured to have three Chancellors present 鈥 Ms Elizabeth Alexander of the University of Melbourne, Dr Graeme Blackman of the University of Divinity, and Lady Hale, Chancellor of Bristol University and visitor to Trinity and the Melbourne Law School as the Caldwell Lecturer.
Professor Hinchcliff comes to the College with impeccable academic qualifications and an impressive resume of global academic leadership roles at the University of Melbourne as Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, and previously at the Ohio State University where he was the Head of Equine Medicine and Surgery. As an alumnus of Trinity (TC 1976), the place he met his wife Carole (TC 1978), Ken brings to the role 鈥渁 deep understanding of what Trinity is鈥, a passion for student education, and a commitment to aim for a Trinity that is internationally recognised for the excellence of all its programs and residential experience.
